Listed below are a selection of recent web site and application designs.
Isle Care
Description: Isle Care is part of Somerset Care, a group of companies that provide care for older people and adults with learning disabilities. Due to the nature of the company's clientele and Investor in People status, compliance to accessibility guidelines was adhered to and whilst catered for throughout the site, was also handled with an easy-read version of the site.
The site was written to web standards, using XHTML for the content, CSS for presentation and layout, with a combination of JavaScript, PHP and MySQL for dynamic content and templating.

Prawnsandwich Admin
Description: The administration backend for Prawnsandwich [see below] is used by club and league staff to run and maintain the various leagues. This part of the service was written in C#, whilst connecting to the same MS SQL database as the Prawnsandwich front end. I joined the project once the foundations had been laid, continued in the established style and setup to finish all the remaining sections. It was my first project using C#/.net and provided an excellent opportunity to develop an understanding of the language and underlying technologies.

Hilkat
Description: Hilkat is the business and personal site of Victoria Haynes. The content for the site is currently in development, although the design is finished. The layout was built using valid XHTML, then two CSS files were created to give contrasting, alternate themes: urban and nature, with the former selected for the final design.

CSS Generator
Description: Undertaken for the Final Year Project requirement of my University degree, the most valuable unit on the course [worth 25% of the overall grade]. An ambitious project, the aim was to create a Web 2.0 application to generate valid Cascading Style Sheets. Due to the short time frame, a horizontal prototype was built – shallow but wide; this allowed all features to be implemented. Users could generate CSS, type it themselves or load existing style sheets. The project allowed me to gain experience of building web applications, including Ajax functionaity. The front end of the application consisted of XHTML and CSS, with JavaScript used client-side [including Ajax] and PHP server-side. MySQL was used for the database. Grade received: First.
The application is in beta mode, unfit for public consumption, so instead of a link to the app are some to screenshots:

- Add a CSS comment

Football Archive
Description: The Football Archive is a site that allows users to select and then stream video of football highlights; it was created for the Streaming Media and Web Programming unit on my degree. The front end uses XHTML and CSS whilst employing JavaScript to perform various client-side functions, including Ajax – the course used Windows servers thus demanding ASP serverside, interacting with an Access database and Windows Media Encoding/Player for the video. Original JavaScript solutions were required to ensure cross-browser compatibility. Grade received: First.
The site can be viewed but as the videos were hosted on the University's Multimedia Server [and I graduated...] they have since been deleted. The site can still be used although without it's raison d'etre. I don't speak French.

Web Site Development Guide
Description: A Web Site development guide built for the Internet Usability and Applications unit group coursework. Each group member was responsible for the content of two web pages, whilst I also took on the responsibility of lead designer – writing the XHTML and CSS then testing to ensure the code was valid. Over four years old now, it is included as an example of the benefits of building websites with web standards. The site still works cross-browser, regardless of the number of times they have been updated, and with browsers that weren't even released at the time. The unit also highlighted potential problems for users with disabilities and gave experience as to avoiding potential problems. Grade received: First.

Portfolio Site
Description: The site you are viewing now! Hence no thumbnail of a screenshot... The design is very simple and straightforward as the priority was to get the portfolio online immediately; however, using the principles of web standards, the site is accessible and the code valid even at the site's genesis. Development will continue... ASAP.
